This is my interpretation of the
Lim-5M Fresco-D, Polish alias of MiG-17PF, radar equipped version of this
aircraft. This Hasegawa tooling is very old and not very accurate, the decals in
it (North Viet-Nam, East Germany and Indonesia) were unusable. That's why I used
the Hi Decal sheet n°72-035.

My goal on this kit
was to try to represent a sun passed camouflage, so I didn't mind making an
inaccurate scheme. In fact, the scheme I did was used on Fresco-C, but on
Fresco-D ??? Dunno ! Never found any pic of it...
Talking about it, I
used Humbrol enamel paints : dark green (195), olive green FS34255 (83 + 120)
and light grey-green FS34226 (78) for the extrados, light blue FS34325 (65 +
120) for the intrados. The whole thing is lightened 10 % inside the panels to
obtain the sun passed effect. The weathering consists of a dark brown juice
and a silver drybrush on the panel rivets The finish is matt, I used a mix of
Gunze flat base and Future/Klir. I think I didn't mix it enough because I
obtained white marks. Anyway, this is a tip for those who build hydroplanes to
represent the salt traces on the floats.
This kit built very well, I
finished it in three days, mainly OOB, except for added scratch things like
copper wire for brake cables or my girlfriend's hair for antenna wire... I
wasn't searching perfection, but I like the result.
As I didn't use penciling, I got
an almost complete decal sheet and hope to build another MiG-17 (or more... I
love MiG, and Sukhoi too, no jealous) very soon...
